McKenzie was born in Wellington, New Zeal and to actress Miranda Harcourt and director Stuart McKenzie. She is of Anglo-Celtic descent and lives in Wellington, where she attended Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, graduating in 2018.
She is the granddaughter of actress Kate Harcourt and Peter Harcourt. Peter was from the family that founded real estate company Harcourts International.
